Hœnir (Old Norse: Hœnir, also Hönir) is an Æsir deity associated with the Æsir-Vanir War and with the creation of humanity. He is one of the Æsir hostages sent to the Vanir alongside Mímir following the end of the war. The Vanir grew frustrated with Hœnir because he appeared indecisive without Mímir’s counsel — whenever Mímir was absent, Hœnir would respond to questions only with the phrase ‘let others decide.’ In retaliation, the Vanir beheaded Mímir.
In the creation of Ask and Embla, a triad of deities — Odin, Hœnir, and Lóðurr — grants gifts to the first humans. Hœnir provides óðr (sense, spirit, or inspiration; the exact meaning is debated) according to one reading of Völuspá.
Hœnir is listed in Völuspá as one of the gods who will survive Ragnarök and cast lots in the renewed world. He is one of the most poorly characterized deities in the surviving primary sources despite being mentioned in several key mythological contexts.
