Rindr (Old Norse: Rindr) is a giantess or semi-divine figure, the mother of Váli by Odin. She is referenced in Baldrs draumar, Völuspá, and briefly in Gylfaginning as the destined mother of the avenger born to kill Höðr. Saxo Grammaticus in Gesta Danorum (Book III) provides the most extended account of Odin’s courtship of Rindr — which involves repeated deceptions and disguises — though Saxo’s heavily Latinized heroic framework substantially transforms the mythological material.
Odin’s coercive courtship of Rindr is one of the episodes cited against Odin in Lokasenna (st. 20), where Loki accuses him of unmanly behavior — possibly a reference to the use of seiðr or disguise. The skaldic poet Kormákr references Rindr in kennings, providing early independent attestation.
